WooCommerce powers roughly 28% of all online stores globally. WordPress underneath it powers roughly 43% of all websites. India alone has the highest WordPress + WooCommerce density per capita anywhere in the world — most of Indian Tier-2 SMB ecommerce, and a large slice of D2C, runs on WP. The US, UK, Australia, and EU mid-market is heavily WC too. And yet most "ecommerce SEO consultants" treat WC as a Shopify lookalike with a WordPress backend that just needs the same playbook in a different wrapper.
It isn't. WooCommerce SEO breaks in places Shopify SEO never breaks.
Theme-and-page-builder bloat eats LCP that no Shopify store ever has to think about — Elementor plus Astra plus 30 child plugins regularly produces a 4–6 second mobile load on a brand-new install. Yoast and RankMath running simultaneously (because someone toggled both at different points) ships duplicate Product schema markup that Google flags as ambiguous. WP-Query pagination on archive pages produces ?paged= URLs by default that drain crawl budget. WooCommerce variable products are the worst offender of all: five attributes with eight values each can spawn 40,000 indexable URLs from a single product if variation routing is left at the WC default. Hosting variance is its own animal — the exact same site on Cloudways with LiteSpeed and Redis is roughly four times faster than the same WordPress install on a shared Hostinger plan, with zero code change. None of this exists on Shopify.
The pricing fight matters too. Yoast Premium is $99/site/year plus the Yoast WC add-on at $79/site/year — $178/site/year just for SEO plugin licensing. RankMath PRO is $79/year for unlimited sites. For an agency or multi-store founder, the difference is not theoretical.
This page treats WooCommerce SEO as its own technical discipline — its own plugin politics, its own permalink decisions, its own variation strategy, its own hosting floor, its own multilingual stack — not a generic ecommerce playbook with the words "Shopify" replaced by "WooCommerce." If you came here looking for a broader ecommerce SEO methodology that covers Shopify, custom builds, and headless, that page exists. This one is for stores already on WordPress, stores that have decided to stay on WordPress, or agency owners who build on WordPress and need an SEO partner who actually knows the stack.
